Lana Tanner decided the new clinic required a formal opening celebration. Mack could deny his wife nothing and agreed.
Jacob saw no need for such an event, but Lana would not take no for an answer. Jacob had watched in amazement as she oversaw the organization of his belongings into an orderly fashion he hadn’t imagined possible. Though he wondered how he would ever locate anything in the future. Even the tent, which he now shared with Burns, who had recovered completely and spent as much time on the beach, or fishing, as possible, had been tidied beyond recognition.
Jacob was too busy, too content with the way things settled into a routine to pay much mind to it, other than to waste half an hour trying to locate a book he’d left by his bed.
Teena had turned out to be a quick learner. He could ask her to examine a patient, and she did so quietly and efficiently, often able to tell him exactly the person’s ailment. Yes, she’d had experience with illness, but still, her skill amazed him.
She was a joy to work with, too. Many times, she anticipated what he needed even before he did. It was like having an extra right arm at his disposal.
But that wasn’t all that pleased him. It was the moments when their eyes met and he felt a silent connection, an unspoken communication that gave him a rush of amazement. He couldn’t say exactly what it was he felt. Only that it was good.
He’d taught her to stitch cuts, bandage wounds and administer laudanum. And so much more. He had no qualms about leaving her in charge of the clinic when he was called away.
“Jacob.” Mack’s call brought Jacob’s attention back to the festivities around him. “Come over here.”
Lana had organized a formal greeting line and Jacob was expected to be in it. He first sought out the young woman who filled so much of his thoughts. “Teena, join me.”
She drew back. “I don’t think I should.”
“Why not? You’re an official part of this clinic.”
“I am Tlingit.”
“Mack and Lana wouldn’t object.” He hated that he couldn’t say the same for everyone else gathered. And where had all these people come from? All dressed up in their best finery, but some with prejudice dirtying their minds.
Mack joined Jacob. “Lana is waiting.”
“I’m trying to convince Teena she should join us.”
Mack grabbed Teena’s hand. “Of course she should.”
A look of fear crossed Teena’s face so quickly, Jacob could almost make himself believe he hadn’t seen it. Almost. Wanting to reassure her, he pulled her free hand through his arm.
As soon as Mack saw they were on their way, he hurried back to Lana’s side.
Jacob murmured, “You’re safe with me. I won’t let anyone hurt you.”
She giggled. “I’m not afraid of being attacked. After all, have you seen Jimmy? My brother would deal with anyone who hurt me.”
“Physically, yes. But does he protect your feelings against what people say?”
She shot him a look of pure amazement. “You think you can do that?”
He chuckled.
